Overview

Cloud computing and network virtualization is changing the landscape of the Internet. It presents an environment for rapid new application deployment which utilizes exposure to network control primitives. These future applications will use customized virtual networks for fine grained security, mobility and content delivery, often requiring connectivity to the legacy Internet. Unfortunately, such virtual networks do not fit business models and protocols employed by current Internet easily, nor the infrastructure providers for virtual networks have the geographic reach to allow for diverse choice of connectivity options.

This project introduces and evaluates a Transit Portal platform. Transit Portal is a peering infrastructure provider that allows new networks to quickly provision peering connections without the need to negotiate with upstream ISPs or rent a rack space in a carrier hotel. Transit Portal maintains stable BGP peering sessions with the upstream ISPs while providing client networks with a one-stop-shop for peering connectivity.
